All the other farmers think Ray is possibly losing his sanity. In the corn, he hears a strange voice say, "If you build it, he will come." After hearing the phrase several more times while his family does not, he begins to ask other farmers if they hear similar voices. At the movie's beginning, Ray is out in his cornfields at dusk, trying his best to be a farmer.
